Dopastatin - A new chimeric molecule for treatment of neuroendocrine tumors
On January 29, 2009 Ipsen Pharma organized a Scandinavian meeting at Arlanda Airport for endocrinologists, gastroenterologists, oncologists and surgeons, to discuss neuroendocrine tumors. Professor Kjell Öberg was the chairman and presented an update on biological treatment of neuroendocrine tumors. At that meeting Dopastatin was presented by Michael Culler from Beaufort Ipsen, as a new compound of interest both for neuroendocrine tumors and also for other endocrine tumors.
On February 2, 2009 Ipsen Pharma organized an Advisory Board in Paris where Professor Kjell Öberg is a member, to discuss the development of Dopastatin for treatment of NETs and also decide upon a clinical Phase II trial which will commence at the beginning of the autumn this year. It will be performed in patients with classical midgut carcinoid. In patients that has not been treated with either somatostatin analogs or dopamine agonists. Dopastatin is a new chimeric molecule that binds both to somatostatin receptor type 2 and dopamine receptor 2. It is known that classical midgut carcinoid tumors express both these receptors and therefore this chimeric molecule might have an impact on the treatment of these tumors.
NCI sponsored neuroendocrine tumor pathology summit, February 7-8, 2009 in Miami
It has been recognized that the classification of neuroendocrine tumors is not clear world-wide. The European Neuroendocrine Tumor Society (ENETS) has developed a classification system, based on the WHO-classification including TNM, staging and a grading system. This classification is different from the American system, just including a different grading system. Another difference is that in Europe proliferation capacity of the tumor is indicated by the pathologist as a percentage of dividing cells (Ki-67 positivity), but is seldom done in US. The impact of the European classification system is to try to tailor treatment for patients based on tumor biology. In this summit clinicians and pathologists from Europe and US met in Miami for a two-day meeting, discussing how we should reach a consensus with regard to classification of the tumors and what data should the pathology report include. The meeting was organized by Professor David Klimstra at Sloan Kettering Hospital, New York, and Professor Irvin Modlin, Yale University, New Haven. Representatives from Europe were Professor Kjell Öberg, Professor Guido Rindi from Parma, Professor Bertram Wiedenmann from Berlin and Professor Dermot O’Toole from Dublin

The European Neuroendocrine Tumor Society annual meeting
ENETS annual meeting is this year located to Granada, March 5-7. The meeting is the largest meeting in the field of neuroendocrine tumors and this year it is hosting 1200 participants. It has been growing every year. There are three invited speakers from the Centre of Excellence Endocrine Tumors, University Hospital, Uppsala, namely Professor Barbro Eriksson, Professor Göran Åkerström and Professor Kjell Öberg. See enclosed programme. Besides that Novartis is sponsoring a Satellite Symposium on Friday the 6th of March entitled “Evolving perspectives on the antiproliferative effects of octreotide treatment” with Professor Kjell Öberg as chairman and also speaker.
